The 2016 Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremony will honor 16 people (8 living and 8 deceased) at Romano’s Caterer’s on Castor and Wingohocking Streets in Philadelphia. There are a record number of inductees this year with some very deserving names from the past. As a member of the VBA Ring One and the PABHOF committee it was great to see these boxing people get inducted this year.

The deceased inductees are led by Erie, PA, lightweight Johnny Bizzarro, 56-11-2 (25), who fought for 130 lb and 135 lb world titles. He is from the Vintage Boxers Group.

Leading the way for the Modern Boxers Group is Hugh “Buttons” Kearney, 18-2 (5) followed by “Big” Joe Thomas, 23-2-1 (19), who was a National Amateur champion as a member of the Montgomery Boys Boxing Club.

Other modern Boxers include Chucky T (Tschorniawsky), 25-10-1 (14), Andre Prophet, Sr., 12-0-1 (10) (deceased), Bennie Amparo, 12-3-5 (5), Monty Sherrick (Belmont Farley), 10-0 (2).  Besides Bizzarro is Bob Baker, 51-16-1 (20), out of Pittsburgh (deceased) is in from Vintage Boxers. From Old Timers George Chip, 42-17-4 (36), out of New Castle and Pittsburgh’s Harry “Peabody Paralyzer” Bobo, 36-9 (24), who are both deceased. Bobo held the “Duration” heavyweight championship (MD & OH) while Joe Louis served in the Army.

Heading the Non-Boxers is trainer Jimmy Arthur who was best known for training Tyrone Everett, cut-man Ralph Citro (who worked with Kronk) and Duke Dugent who ran the 23rd PAL with such boxers as heavyweight champion “Smokin” Joe Frazier, “Bad” Bennie Briscoe, “Gypsy” Joe Harris, Jimmy Young, Bobby “Boogaloo” Watts, “Classy” Al Massey, Willie “the Worm” Monroe, Lloyd Nelson, Mario Saurenann and Garnet “Sugar” Hart.

The Non-Boxers Group includes writer Jack “KO” Obermayer who has covered over 3,500 shows since 1963. He is joined by trainers George James and manager/trainer Augie Scimeca who owned and operated Augie’s Gym in South Philadelphia.

John DiSanto does a fine job as PA HOF Chairman putting in countless hours besides his own site www.phillyboxinghistory.com and www.fightnews.com as well as his annual Briscoe Awards in October.

This banquet event starts at 4pm. $65.00 per ticket.  Call John Gallagher at 215-920-8791 for information.

  1. All went well Sunday with 16 inductees that either J Russell Peltz commented on or Nino DuBuno introduced. The Bizzaro family came all the way from Erie, PA, and there must have been half a dozen of them. Real nice group.
