Gmail - unable to register a username that does not exist

So you think of a cool new name to use for personal or business email. You run to your computer, go to the Gmail home page and are ready to sign up as a new user. You enter in the name, check the availability and ::boom:: you are told that the name you are trying to register is unavailable...

This stinks but you are determined to get this address, by any means necessary! You send an email to the desired email address asking the person if they would be willing to give it up for a small fee. Out of the blue you get a real kick to the butt. Here comes a bounceback message saying something to the effect of "The email account that you tried to reach does not exist."

Why can't I have a Gmail address that does not exist you ask????

This is because Google accounts that are not used for more than nine months are disabled. Usernames are not recycled so you'll have to pick a different one.

Don't believe me? Check out "The username I want is not available:"
Gmail Help  › Your Account  › Creating an Account  › The username I want is not available

and "Dormant addresses:"
Gmail Help  › Your Account  › Account Information  › Dormant addresses

This sucks - believe me, I found this out the hard way. Next time you talk to a Google rep, demand that they release unused email addresses!!!!

Blackberry Enterprise Manager "Last Contact Time" is off

The Blackberry Enterprise Manager has a column in the users section called "Last Contact Time". This section lets you know the last time a users blackberry succesfully contacted the server and sent or received an email. If a blackberry user frantically calls you and says " I am not receiving emails" or "my blackberry isn't synching to my calendar this morning" yet, the Exchange server is up and running other people are receiving emails at their desk, the BES is the first place you want to look.

So say today is 12/28/09 but when you look at the BES console the Last Contact Time says 12/26/09, wtf do you do?

If it is just one user who is off, you could right click that users name and select Resend Service Book and also select Reload User. In the past I have had success with this. But chances are that you will have to reactivate everyone at once but trying this move.

Right Click the My Computer icon on your desktop
Select Manage
Open Services & Applications
Select Services
Look for any Blackberry service with the startup type of Automatic,
Make sure those services are Started. (simply right click on that service and choose start)
Wait a minute or two, check the BES Contact Time. Now it should be up to the minute.

This happened because Blackberry service or two that stopped working on the server for whatever reason. Usually because of an unexpected reboot of the server or a spike in the electric.

Hope this helps

Never sign up for a 2 -year Verizon contract

Take my advice - never and I mean NEVER get sucked in to signing a two year contract for Verizon. I know the discount they dangle in front of your face is pretty good but it is NOT worth it in the long term. As an admin for an organization that plenty of Blackberry users, it is my experience that just about all Blackberry devices start going to crap after one year. This is where Verizon puts their hooks in you. Your phone is dying / not performing like it once did but you still have a year left on your deal.... You can Verizon support to ask for help and no dice. If you have insurance they will issue you a refurbished phone that is usually a piece of crap. After two or three replacements the customer will obviously want something different. This is where Verizon gets you - you are still under contract and have no reason to offer you discounted pricing. They force you to pay just about full price for a new phone.

Learn from my bad experience- if using Verizon, sign up for the one year deal. The Blackberry devices they issue just aren't built to last over the long haul. You will save long term and not be forced into early upgrade fees and extended contracts etc etc etc.

Remove "Security Tool" Spyware

If you start seeing this "Security Tool: Protect Your PC" pop-up, you have probably been pulling your hair since it tell your just about every file on your PC is infected. You select remove and it just won't go away. You click and X out and are trying to figure out how to just get back to work! Sorry my friend, it ain't happenin'...This program isn't here to protect you, it is adware designed to steal your info. First and foremost - DO NOT CLICK ANY OPTIONS THIS GIVE YOU!!!!! Clicking anything will only make matters worse.

Instead, follow these steps to get rid of this filthy, nasty, ugly, disgusting form of ad ware that is trying desperately to steal your personal info...

1) Reboot in safe mode (press F8 repeatedly)

2) Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data

3) Look for a folder with a name of 8 digits (ex 28907329) & delete this bitch!

4) Empty your recycle bin and reboot normally.

This will get rid of this junk but it may come back. These programs are pretty shifty and leave behind little files and other remnants that are hard to track down. If you have the means, I recommend saving all info that you know if good to a flash drive and then reinstalling the entire Operating System. This is the only true way to completely get rid of it. Extreme - I know - but this problem is a real pain in the keyster and will only return to haunt you at the absolute worst time. On a brighter note, once the OS is reinstalled, your PC will run faster & smoother than ever!
