For those who missed it, Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson (23-3, 17ko's) got robbed on ESPN this Friday in his fight against Ishmail Arvin when the referee declared that a punch caused a nasty gash over Thompson's left eye when video replay clearly indicated that it was a head butt. Through 6 rounds, "The Messenger" was comfortably ahead in a decent fight where he scored two knockdowns in the 3rd round. The referee admitted on TV after seeing the replay that it was a butt but was forced by the commission to stick by his original ruled that at the time he felt the cut was caused by a punch. Chalk this one up as a very bad break for The Messenger but you can be assured there will be protests over this one. At minimum, it should be declared a no-contest.

It's finally show time for Bridgeport's Harry Yorgey (20-0-1, 9ko's) as he has been finally cleared to take on New Englands Jason LeHoullier (21-0-1, 8ko's) for the IBF America's Jr middleweight title in the opening bout on this weeks edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights in Nashville, TN. It has been a long time in the making after a nasty slip with his original team caused lots of legal & political issues. To make it official, Yorgey and his new team recently held a press conference, eqiupt with food, video previews and Q&A in East Norriton to let the world know that the fight will go on! Though we have heard this before and saw the show stop at the 11th hour, it seems different his time around as Banner promotions head Art Pellulo, who promotes both fighters, personally came to tell the crowd how it is within reach to get Yorgey a shot against Verno Phillips for the true IBF title, how we have seen the last of Yorgey in Philly (if he wins) unless a casino involved and how Harry needs to win if he wants to go further in this sport. Yorgey's new trainer Henry Rasich spoke on his notice of a rapid mprovement in strength and stamina from a guy who he has known since childhood. Harry Yorgey himself went on record to say if he doesn't win, he has no one to blame but himself. Yorgey is the favorite due to LeHoullier's performances in his last two outings. There has been a lot of BS going on with his bout, it is very easy to forget that Yorgey had, hands down, the Philly 2006 fight of the year against Jeremy Yelton. Granted, Yelton will never get any sort of hall of fame consideration, his isn't far out of LeHoullier's class and a balls out performance like that on national TV could make a big statement. A loss would be devastating. The Bridgeport native goes for his in front of a national audience.  Be sure to tune in August 22nd, 9pm sharp!

On the next Peltz Boxing card look out for Mt. Airy's Mike Jones (14-0, 12ko's) as he attempts to make the jump to the world rankings when he takes on Brazil's Juliano Ramos (15-1, 12ko's) in a 10 rounder for the NABA Welterweight title on August 29th at The New Alhambra. Jones, who is becoming a major fan draw in this area, has been raising the bar each time out and thrilling the crowd with his punching power and development as a complete fighter. His toughest obstacle so far has been a bout with sore hands but he says now the hands are feeling great and he is ready to get it on to get the belt. Ramos is said to be a good puncher with a soft chin. He has had a few losses overturned for a variety of reasons which has kept his glossy record in tact. I don't think lady luck will be on his side on this night so he better bring his A game. Congrats to Team Promise for landing the opportunity to fight for the gold as the North American Boxing Association is an affiliate of the WBA and to win the title all but assures a top 15 ranking in this major sanctioning body. More info to come.

In the co-feature, Philly's Latif Mundy (8-0, 3ko's) looks to separate himself from the pack in a suddenly hot jr. middleweight division when he takes on former Olympian & Contender Season 2 contestant Rudy Cisneros (11-2, 10ko's) of Chicago in an 8 rounder. It should be a very good test for Mundy who is a former PA Gold Glove champion and now undefeated as a pro.Cisneros has won his last 3 by KO and at 26 years old, wants to make a run towards the top. This could end up being the fight of the night.

Former amateur standout Ray Serrano has been added to the card and will put his perfect 6 - 0 record against the Lancaster spoiler Manuel Guzman in his toughest test to date as a pro in a 6 round welterweight battle. Cruiserweight Pedro Martinez looks to bounce back from a stunning loss after a lot of pre- turning pro hype against ReShawn Scott who recently won his pro debut at The Legendary Blue Horizon in a battle of new coming Philly Cruiserweights. They have been packing them in like sardines at The New Alhambra so get your tickets now at www.peltzboxing.com or by calling 215-765-0922

Power Productions returned to the Cisco Arena located in Oaks, PA this Friday with a 6 fight card that was highlighted by Eric "Outlaw" Hunter of West Philly outclassing Rhode Island's Robert Deluz over 8 one sided rounds. The crowd got a little restless near the end pleading for more action and Hunter obliged scoring two of his three total knockdowns last in the final round, the first coming with a picture perfect counter left hook as Deluz tried to knock his head off with a wide overhand right. Deluz got up but was sent back down soon after courtesy of a three punch combo. Again, Deluz beat the count and this time lasted until the final bell to no avail as all three judges scored  the fight heavily in favor of Eric Hunter who improves to 10 - 1. On the under card, New Castle, DE's Ryan Belasco again showed up with a full tank of gas and went a strong 6 round route to take a one sided unanimous decision over Justin Danforth of Wisconsin.  Jesus Barbosa fought through a cut on his hairline to win a tough majority decision over Keywayne Hill in what turned out to be the best two way action fight of the night.  In womens action Tracey Hunt won a unanimous decision over Christina Leadbetter in a four rounder. Ronson Frank came in from New York and impressively picked apart Earl Doe before knocking him out at 1:54 of the 5th round. Travis "The Animal" Thompson and Corey McCants fought to draw in a mundane four rounder. In the opener, Joselito Candelitto was given a duck and shot it down in the first round improving to 4 - 0. More to come with some photos soon.

Power Productions returned to the National Guard Armory and this 5 fight card came as advertised, leaving many in attendance saying "now that is Philly boxing" after this very entertaining card . In the first of three title fights Tyric "Too Sweet Robinson rose to the occasion and defeated Lenny DeVictoria by way of unanimous decision to become the new USBA regional Jr Welterweight champion.  In the 2nd title fight, Rasheem Brown cruised through the first three rounds, but then all hell broke loose as he and Jameel Wilson went toe to toe and blow for blow in an early candidate for Philly Fight of the Year. In the Main Event, Mexico's Jose Hernandez came to Philly with a full tank of diesel fuel and scored a big upset over the previously undefeated Rasheim Jefferson to become the new USBA featherweight champion. On the under card Tony Ferrante KO'd Ray Ruiz in the 2nd round with a nasty straight right, leaving him out on the canvas for more than 5 minutes. Hopefully the Ruiz is ok. "The New" Ray Robinson scored 3 knockdowns in the first on Jason Jordan but the rugged journeyman was able to last the distance only to lose a very lopsided decision. Click here for my full recap and to leave a comment, we also called in "The Hatchet" Charles Brewer to give his championship perspective, click here to read the Hatchet blow by blow report. The photos are finally in, I apologize for the delay.

At the Legendary Blue Horizon, Joey Abell gave some payback when he knocked Maurice Wheeler out of the ring at the end of the second round to secure his 20th win as a pro and a house full of fans chanting "Joey, Joey, Joey". Amazingly enough seconds after this KO of the Year candidate, Gerald "The Jedi" Nobels stormed the ring and claimed he wants next. Joey responded by saying "you can get it too if you really want it" Hook it up Elbaum! In the co-feature, Gee Cullmer squeaked out a majority decision win over the known spoiler Mustapha Johnson in their 6 round middleweight fight.  Ecuadorian middleweight Mario Mina made a statement in his pro debut with a huge knockout win over a very tough Pedro Calla of Peru in what turned out to be the best fight of the night. Philly's Gerald Smith turned in his second strong outing at The Blue, this time battering Jose Guerrido around the ring til that corner threw in the towel in round 2. Swedish meatball Anders Holmberg was dropped in the 1st but got up and scored a fishy 2nd round KO Archie Hopkins. Investigations are pending..... Showtime Steve Chambers capped off the night with a win over Jean Petit of Haiti in what was a pretty wild fight and had the ladies screaming "Showtiiiiiiiime". Osvaldo Rivera, Joel De La Paz & Calvin Goldwire all won by decision. Simon "One Punch" Carr's official fight fell out but he hung around to put on an exhibition with Tommie "Big Poppa" Speller. The write up and most pictures are in, click here to read and leave a comment

Boxing’s “The All-American Prizefighter” Rob Calloway (74-7-1, 58 KOs), of St. Joseph’s, Missouri strengthened his position as a cruiserweight contender in all 4 organizations with a sensational 9th round knockout at 3:05 of the round over previously unbeaten Juan Carlos Robles (9-1, 4 KOs), Waynesboro, Virginia.  A 4 round middleweight match had Charlottesville, Virginia’s George Rivera (8-1, 3 KO’s) a winner over late substitute Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor (12-14, 6 KOs), New Castle, Delaware, due to a very good left jab.  Judges Weisfeld and Gross had it 39-37 with LaRosa at 40-36.  Referee was Rosato. Jesus Barbosa (3-0-1, 3 KOs), Philadelphia, used a Tyson-like style to come back in the 2nd round after having his hands full in the first with the taller Shavaris Buie (0-4), Brooklyn, NY.  Referee Rosato called a halt to this featherweight match at the end of the round when Buie complained of an injured hand. Ken Hissner was ringside read his full report here.

The conditions outdoors in the Tri-State area were were cold, rainy and flat out miserable this past Friday night. While most would prefer to stay inside on an evening like this, the Philly fight fans weathered the storm to create a sold out, jam packed audience at The New Alhambra. In the ring, the main event of the evening was a rematch between NABF featherweight champion Rogers "The Tiger" Mtagwa of South Philly via Tanzania and Aldo Valtierra of Mexico who looked to settle some unfinished business from their tight knit affair from the summer of 2007. In the co-feature, undefeated featherweight Teon Kennedy of North Philly was making the leap to 8 round status against this toughest opponent to date in Castulo Gonzalez of Lynn, MA. The under card had a 6 rounder  with Victor Vasquez taking of Rami Ibraham of the Oven Gym, Travis "The Animal" Thompson took on Emmanuel Rosas and three former Golden Gloves champions in Anthony Flores, Dennis Hasson and Perdo Martinez all made their pro debuts in separate bouts. Click here to read what happened on the corner of Swanson & Ritner on March 7, 2008.

On February 15, 2008 Big Box Promotions & Fighting City Productions collaborated for a 5 fight card at The Commerce Bank Arts Centre in Sewell, NJ. Controversy surrounded the card and the original line-up was changed at the last minute but in the end, it was Eric “Murder” Mitchell of Philadelphia who stepped in on less than one day notice and showed a lot of grit as he shook off  1 ½ years of ring rust to earn a razor thin, 10 round unanimous decision over Edwin Vasquez to claim the vacant IBC Americas light middleweight title. In the co-feature, “The Gentleman” Chazz Witherspoon started slow but finished fast scoring a TKO in the 4th over Jonathan Haggler of South Carolina. Jesus Barbosa of Philly scored three knockdowns in the 1st round, two with hard left hooks to the body and following up with a crushing left hook to the ear of Melvin McGuire to seal the deal at 2:16 of the round. On paper it looked like a dud but the end result was a decent night of pro boxing at The Legendary Blue Horizon courtesy of Don Elbaum & Vernoca Michaels. In the main event, Lenny DeVictoria hits the .500 mark as he earned a unanimous decision win in a tough fight over fellow journeyman Derreck Moon. In the co-feature, Gee Cullmer persecuted John "The Baptist" Terry over 6 rounds en route to a unanimous decision win. Gee was more talented but I'll give it to this Terry kid, he comes to fight despite his record. Ran Nakash stays undefeated with a 2nd round TKO over Rey Ruiz. Samir the Pharoah & Julias Edwards win their pro debut. Tex Cobb is given a 10 minute standing ovation as he presented his diploma from Temple University.  Read all about it here.

Power Productions kicks off the 2008 fight season on January 25th with a good card at The Blue Horizon but the proposed main event between Chucky Cavallo vs. Jameel Wilson was axed at the last minute by Greg Serb due to a sports hernia suffered by Cavallo. In the new main event, we found out that Rasheem Brown is back in town and he scored a hard 3rd round knockout win over Jose "El Macho" Medina on Friday nights Power Productions show.  Jason Jordan upsets Tyric Robinson, Oaktree Brown dispatches Kevin Hood in the first, Farah Khalil wins a verynarrowdecision over Juergan Hartenstein in a good fight. Jesus Barbosa and Rami Ibraham let the leather fly in a draw, Tony Ferrante makes it 2 in a row with a win over Camron Bright, Hammerin Hank Lundy's quest to bring the hardware back home to Philly continues with a win over Damon Antoine. Full write up is in, more pictures to follow very soon of a good night of boxing at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

Lenny DiVictoria wrapped up the Philly 2007 boxing season with a fight of the year performance as he knocked out Elad Schmouel in the 6th in a great 2 way action bout.  Both fighters gave it their all but only one was left standing over 6 rounds of junior welterweight action. In the co-feature, Jules Blackwell earned ranking on the next pound for pound list with a hard fought win over Paul Fernandez in a match up of unbeaten featherweight prospects. Gee Cullmer once again pounded out a victory, this time over South Carolina's Marcus Brooks by majority decision. Now with 12 wins under his belt, Gee has to considered among the top local middleweights in the area. The under card was focused on the new comers and Luis Castro did have a nice showing against an extremely determined, yet outgunned Conrado Garcia and more Click here for the full write up and pictures from the Blue Horizon

On the same night in at the Hockensin PAL, Ken Hissner reports that Dave "TNT" Tiberi  and the First State Boxing Series also had great main event  with Tony Baker pulling a slim upsets over Richard Stewart in a hotly contested two way thriller which saw an early knockdown and a late surge. On the undercard Philly's Teon Kennedy stayed undefeated with a decision win over Arthur Parker and The Contender Aaron Torres out hustled Jesse Williams to earn a unanimous decision to make it two wins in a row. Click here to read the full report courtesy of Ken Hissner of www.boxingtribune.com

Peltz Boxing returned to the New Alhambra and Mike Jones was awesome in the 3rd round scoring a fiery TKO at the 1:44 mark over Pito Cardona. In a fast paced fight Jones showed speed, power and the ability to adapt on the fly. In the co-feature Big John Poore overcame a slow start and found himself in a deep war with Dan Whetzel over 8 round. Some call it a candidate for fight of the year others thought Poore should have done much better in this heavyweight slugfest. In the end Poore won by unanimous decision. Mustapha Johnson outlasted Joe Christy over 6 bar room rounds. Latif Mundy out worked a determined Maurice Williams in the rematch. Victor Vasquez had a tough fight and got the win over Fraudis Rojas of Cuba. Felix Arroyo gets his revenge on Tommy Garcia. Tony "Boom Boom" Farrante was victorious in his pro debut in a slugfest with Heath Harris which ended in UD. Adam Harris overcame a slow start to pull out a majority decision over Gary Campbell. Jesus Barbosa starched Alex Matos who is no stranger to the canvas in :29 in round 1. Khalil Farrah wins by MD over Terrell Boggs. The write up & massive photo gallery are in!

In a fight of two tough heavyweights, Mark "Oaktree' Brown earned a unanimous decision win over Dave Brunelli at the Wachovia Spectrum on Friday night.  In the main event, Richard Stewart and Jameel "Black Gold" Wilson went through an absolute war over 8 rounds of Light Heavy. A rematch is a must! Gurcharan Singh won an uninspired unanimous decision over "Millionaire" Mike Miller. I won't say the Millionaire was flat-out robbed but it was much closer than the final cards of 60 - 54 & 59 - 55 x2  showed. Grant Cudjoe got a tougher than expected nights work from Jason Bergman though he did manage to do enough to get a justified win. Ray"Tito" Serrano looked good in his pro debut and got a 1st round knockout. Click here for the write up and pictures

Harry Joe Yorgey defeats Martinus Clay with a 10 round unanimous decision in their rematch this past Friday at The Legendary Blue Horizon. In the Main Event, Mike "No Joke" Stewart lost a one sided unanimous decision to Robert Frankel over 12 rounds of consistent action. In the co-feature, Mike "Machine Gun" Jones needed only 1 clip to take out Richard Hall. On the under card, Latif Mundy flattened alleged steel chinned Mexican Robert Florentino. Teon Kennedy dispatched James Franks after two rounds of work to the head and body. Victor Vasquez put a whoopin' on Markel Muhammad. John Poore and Mike Miller had a pretty entertaining 6 round heavyweight fight. Omar Pittman won a very tough fight against Demetrius Davis where both fighters were cut early and dished out a lot of glove leather. Click Here for the full write up and pictures.

Outdoor boxing, you gotta love it! Dave Tiberi & TNT Productions brought the fights outdoors and turned in a very good card at Delaware Park.  In the Main Event, "The Italian Assassin" Chucky Cavallo stopped by for a tune up but after this one, Shannon "Trouble" Miller should change his ring name to "The Bad Mechanic" because turned out to be a disaster for the undefeated fighter. In the co-feature, Richard Stewart won a hard fought unanimous decision over a game Jake Rodriguez. Dhafir Smith scored two knockdowns on Larry Marks but a costly point deduction denied him the victory. Damon Antoine showed a lot of heart and more. The complete write up with photos is in!

The fights were back on Broad & Thompson but the oven like conditions at The Legendary Blue Horizon weren't enough to stop Minnesota Ice as Joey Abell made quick work of Levon Warner scoring a huge 1st round knockout win.  Jules Blackwell and Paul Fernandez look good in their respective bouts. Naji Murray also scores a big KO win. Click here to read how it went down on this 8 fight card. Be sure to leave a comment!

There was a small war on the corner of Swanson & Ritner this past Friday as Dee Lee, Rich Clarke and Sonny Mistretta teamed up for a very good seven fight card at the New Alhambra in South Philly. Derek Ennis was shocked in the 3rd round, Round 13 - 18 of the Joe Christy and Sonny Bono trilogy were the best. Simon Carr and Andrew Hemphill battled to a draw over 4 rounds in a hard fought match up. On Friday night at The New Alhambra, the Fairmount Hall of Famer J. Russell Peltz teamed up with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions to put on a  a stiff 8 fight card that gave the crowd reasons to ooooh and ahhh and debate if the standing 8 count should come back into effect. The top biller was aging ring vet Bronco McKart (51 - 7, 31ko's) who returned to Philly after 10 long years on the road but quickly won back any long lost fans by winning a slim, hard fought thriller over Enrique Ornales (25 - 4, 15ko's) of Mexico via split decision and earning the right to be called NABF Middleweight champion. It was the night of the knockout in Atlantic City this Saturday and we witnessed the end of Arturo Gatti as he was beaten to a pulp by Alfonso Gomez who becomes the first member of The Contender series to score an important victory. Kermit "The Killer" Cintron did a serious job on Walter Mattyesse scoring 3 knockdowns and finishing it early in the 2nd with a beautiful left uppercut, straight right combo. Cintron now wants a shot at Sugar Shane Mosley. Kaseem Wilson opened the card and won a unanimous decision. For more news and undercard results click here.

The fights were in upstate New Jersey but it was well worth the two hour ride as Danny Serratelli, Andre Kut and the entire KEA Boxing Promotions team brought some class back to the sport of boxing at the Birchwood Manor Resort in Whippany New Jersey. We were shown that the Jersey boys can throw down too highlighted by Chucky Mussachio stayed undefeated in a tough fight against Chandler Durham. Greg Robinson and the Power Productions crew were back at The Armory this Friday night with another solid card and the main event is once again an upset as Ivan "Mighty" Robinson loses to Darien Ford by majority decision. The ladies steak the show as Cindy Serrano and Lakeysha Williams have a lights out 6 round fight with Seranno getting the nod by unanimous decision but should have been a draw. Latif Mundy and Maurice Williams put on a Power Production style classic in the opener in a 4 round war which saw Mundy get the win by majority decision.
