Yusef Mack & Derek Ennis win PA State titles at The Armory

Photos by Zach Radel / www.zarphotography.com

Joey Eye Promotions came to the National Guard Armory this past weekend and once again the Philly fight scene legend delivered a night full off knockdowns and drag-outs. In the Main Event, the world rated Light Heavyweight Yusef Mack returned home to take on another Philly fighter in Omar Pittman who was looking to score an upset. The PA State and NABA Light Heavyweight titles were on the line as well as a possible top ranking in the WBA. In the co-feature, Derek Ennis looked to put his name back a top the list of young Philly junior middleweights and his assignment was no slouch as he took on the 41 year old day time trash man Troy Browning in a 10 round State title fight. The under card was patch worked together but it did produce two entertaining heavyweight fights when Anthony Gatt took on Jonathan Felton and also when Lamont Barnes took on Tyaab Beale in 4 rounders. Jules Blackwell looked to get a bounce back win and Joel De La Paz returned from North Jersey to once again lace them up in our town.

Mack attacks Pittman!

The nights main event featured two local fighters with separate skill sets but one common attribute, they both could fight. Yusef Mack (26-2, 16ko's) was a one time anointed prodigy of the worlds 168 lb division, only to see his shot at the big time go up in smoke due to losses against world rated opponents. This is a new ear for Mack as he moved up a division in order not to kill his body to make weight. So far so good at 175 lbs for Mack as he most recently won the NABA title in an ESPN carried fight against Daniel Judah in Brooklyn. Coming into this fight ranked #9 by the WBA, an impressive win is sure to position Mack for another run towards the more meaningful gold.

Pittman (14-5, 8ko's) on the other hand has only faced a world rated opponent once which was in his last fight which came in Montreal against Jean Pashall. Pittman didn't win the fight but did expose Pashall as more of a pretender than an actual contender, rocking his opponent and almost putting him away in the later rounds. With a win here, Pittman still probably wouldn't be considered "world class" but would have a lot of power at the bargaining table when it came to negotiating future fights.

Inside of the ring, Mack played the role of boxer and Pittman looked to slug. In this case, the boxer eluded the puncher's bombs but was able to return fire with pinpoint accuracy. Though Mack was clearly winning every round, Pittman kept on coming, throwing heavy rights in hopes of landing that one shot knockout punch. The drama unfolded late in the 6th round when Mack cleanly connected with an overhand right which sent Pittman staggering into the corner. Mack wasted no time in following up with a bevy of punches which put Pittman down hard. Pittman did beat the 10 count but was visibly wozy which left the referee no choice but to stop it with a second remaining in the round.

Winner - 2:59 in the 6th round Yusef Mack

Ennis shuts down Browning!

The co-feature was also an interested match-up which featured two fighters from our area, both of whom desperately needed to make a big statement after recent slip-up's in the ring.

Germantown's Derek "Pooh" Ennis (16-2, 12ko's) is considered to be one of the most well rounded fighters in our area. He was born into the sport and has continued to learn and improve well into his adult life. When he fights, you are almost assured it will be entertaining regardless of if he wins or loses. After suffering a surprise loss last year at the unknown Alphonso Williams, Ennis returned to reel off three straight knockout victories, albeit against low level of fighters. On this night he would take on an experienced veteran with a good record, the type of fighter who he has yet to face as a pro.

Troy Browning (20-3, 8ko's) on the other hand unexpectedly made a name for himself a year ago when he won a decision over the then highly regarded Babyface Garcia live on ESPN. Feeling he was not getting the respect he deserved, the Browning team followed up by taking on two more well regarded prospects in Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak, losing 10 round unanimous decisions in both fights but showing he could hang in there with younger, fast fighters.

In the ring, Derek Ennis played the matador and Browning played the bull with Pooh leaving the 41 year old phenom swinging at air for more of the night. Browning kept on coming and Ennis kept of boxing. He would bait Browning in, slip away and fire off two, three and four punch combo's almost at will.

Browning was most effective when he went after the body. A strategy he didn't use nearly enough. Neither man was ever in serious trouble or truly hurt but it was still a very solid 10 rounds worth of boxing from Ennis, who on this night, showed he is worthy of making the jump into the next level and capable of winning there too. The fight went to the cards which read 100 - 90 x2 & 98- 92 all in favor of Derek Pooh "Ennis".

Gatt outbombs Felton in a sloppy slugfest!

West Chester's Anthony Gatt (7-1, 4ko's) was sent to the canvas in the 2nd round, courtesy of a Jonathan Felton (5-12, 5ko's) left hook but pulled himself off the deck to win a 4 round unanimous decision over the Carolina based fighter. This one wasn;t pretty but it sure was entertaining as these two fired away and looked to basically knock the other guys head off.

Felton hung in their early but ran out of gas mid way through. Unfortunately for him, Gatt came with a full tank and did his best work in rounds 3 and 4 with hard body shots and right hooks to the head.

It went to the cards which read 39 - 37 & 38-37 x 2 for Gatt

Blackwell blows through Dennis!

Phoenixville's Jules "The Ghost" Blackwell (8-1-2, 3ko's) was given a duck in his return to the ring and handled his business very quickly as he battered Javier Dennis (1-2) around the ring until referee Gary Rosato mercifully stopped it at the 2:33 mark of round 1.

If anyone earned an easy fight it is Jules who went on a run earlier this year taking on tough fight after tough fight. It will be interesting to see how he bounces back after suffering his first career loss. Tonight was a good start.

Beale stops Barnes in 2!

Heavyweight Tyaab Beale (1-1, 1ko) scored two knockdowns en route to a 2nd round stoppage over Lamont Barnes (0-1)to earn his first win as a pro. These two big guys traded some heavy shots early and often. A quick 3 punch combo from Beale put Barnes down late in the second. Barnes seemed stunned at first but possibly able to continue although the referee didn't seem to agree and called a halt to the battle.

De La Paz blows out Hord!

Joel De La Paz (2-0, 1ko) needed only :35 to dispose of Indiana's Ryan Hord (0-3, 3ko losses), nailing him with a left hook that put Hord down well past the needed 10 count. No disrespect to De La Paz but Hord should never be allowed to fight again, he might get seriously hurt in there.

De La Paz improves to 2-0 after this starching.

Mark Oaktree Brown wins WBF Heavyweight title

On September 27th, Mark "Oaktree" Brown went into enemy territory and got the job done scoring a dramatic 8th round TKO over Connecticut's heavily favored hometown hero Tony Grano to become the new WBF Heavyweight champion. All reports of this fight are unverified since I haven't seen the footage yet but word is that Oaktree overcame two early knockdowns and fought back, delivering a smelling salts type of KO on the previously undefeated Grano. Immediately after his win, Oaktree and his team called in to me to share their excitement on this victory, proclaiming themselves as champions. In a post fight phone interview, Oaktree was ecstatic, almost in disbelief that he was a champ and now is is looking to have fun with it and go on a run. He also looks to be able to finally be able to make some money out of this business. Congrats to Oaktree Brown, the grimy, underground training fighter who made his name the hard way through this rough and tumble business. He now is a spot where he can be the guy who separates the prospects from suspects. Keep getting them and make that money Oak!

Chambers wins again, Nakash stops Robinson, Culmer squeaks past Wilson at The Blue!

The last fight card of the 2008 summer in Philly was at the Legendary Blue Horizon on Sept 12th and they came through with an exciting card that featured many local fighters facing off against one another. In the main event, "Showtime" Steve Chambers got his first shot at the headliner against perennial B-sider Kevin Carmody, a fighter who has taken on a bevy of rising prospects in his short career. There was a Cruiserweight showdown between two familiar faces as Israel's Ran Nakash made his 6th pro stop the famed Philly fight hall. He would get the first real test of his career as he signed on to face the big punching Larry Robinson of South Philly in what was scheduled for 8 rounds but everyone in the building knew it wouldn't go anywhere near that long. The other co-feature was a battle between two fighters who have been on the opposite end of many controversial decision in their day. Gee Culmer just can't seem to get any credit in this town for his wins, while Jameel "Black Gold" Wilson has gone the distance with some of the best in very close, entertaining only to get shafted on the scorecards. Also slated for action were two regarded amateurs making their pro debut in "Dangerous" Darrell Jones & Derek Bivins who fought in separate bouts. New Yawker William Jeter also stopped by to take on Pete Guthy. Scroll down to find out how it went down.

Steve Chambers....vs....Kevin Carmody
Philly..................Philly
17-1-1, 5ko's...........10-9, 1ko

This main event featured two of Philly's youngest, yet most experienced Jr. Welterweights. "Showtime" Steve Chambers, the brother of former King of the Blue "Fast" Eddie Chambers was getting his first shot to fill the void his bro left a little over a year ago. Carmody is no stranger to promotionally pushed opposition. At 22 years old, he has traveled the country and at times had his arm raised in victory. The main question coming into this was not if either man could fight, but who would take the initiative to actually make a fight out of it? Carmody isn't known for his aggressiveness and Chambers, until recently, had a tendency to not fight with much fire.

All questions about the pace of this fight were answered immediately as both men stood in the center of the ring exchanging good leather. Midway through the round, Carmody landed a straight right down the pike which put Chambers on the seat of his pants. Chambers did beat the 10 count as Carmody stayed relaxed and picked his shots.

Down but far from out, Chambers and Carmody continued to exchange with Carmody getting the better through 3 rounds. The tide turned in the 4th when Chambers opened a cut over Caromdy's left eye. In the 5th a straight right hand from Chambers sent Carmody's mouthpiece flying into press row. Round 6 was very close and Carmody threw combination on the inside while Chambers looked to land the hard overhand right to the head.

The action died out down the stretch with Chambers seemingly doing more than the tiring Carmody. The fight went to the scorecard which read 78 - 73, 77 - 75 & 77- 74 for Chambers who improves to 18 - 1 - 1, 5ko's

Larry Robinson....vs....Ran Nakash
South Philly............Israel

Don Elbaum finally decided to step up the competition for his fighter Ran Nakash and this one was expected to be a war. In the end it was a one sided bombing as a Ran Nakash short right hook ended matters :50 into the 1st round of this Cruiserweight battle. An impressive win to say the least. Welcome to the Philly top 10 list.

Gee Culmer....vs....Jameel Wilson
Philly..............Philly

As stated in the opening segment, this was a battle between two fighters have been involved in many close fights over the past few years. Culmer seems to always get the nod while Wilson usually gets the shaft. The ending of this one is open for debate as well in what turned out to be a very good two way action battle between two Philly natives.

In the opening three rounds, Gee Culmer put on a boxing clinic, using the ring, working his jab, sneaking in his straight right and getting out of the way of incoming danger.

But I know Jameel Wilson, and the book on him is he will lull you to sleep and give you a false sense of confidence, then lay the hammer on you. The middle rounds were very close, very competitive as Wilson dramatically picked up the pace and in the process, changed Gee's approach from that of a smart boxer to street brawler.

Round 6 and 7 were big for Wilson who had Gee on the ropes and consistently land a variety of punches. Gee absorbed the shots and fired back some of his own, willing to fight it out. The crowd erupted at the end of these rounds.

The 8th started with a solid toe to toe exchange. Midway through Gee went back to his early formula of boxing instead of brawling and did quite well. Wilson came alive as time was winding down which sparked off another two way exchange until the final bell sounded.

The crowd was buzzing and press row scoring was all over the place. When Ring Announcer Larry Tornambe grabbed the mic, he announced a majority decision in favor of Culmer by scores of 77 - 75, 78 - 74 with the third judge seeing it even at 76-76.

Derek Bivins....vs....Darrell Martin
Philly.................Baltimore

Derek Bivins started off his pro career in style with a one sided unanimous pounding over the usually durable Darrell Martin. In the beginning it was competitive but after round two, you could make a case for round 3 & 4 being 10 - 8's as Bivins continuously stalked and battered Martin around the ring.

It went to the cards with all three judges seeing it 40 - 36 in favor of Bivins who is now 1-0 as a pro,

Darrell Jones....vs....James Wynn
Philly.................

Dangerous Darrell Jones says he plans on cracking the top 10 list by next year and he is off to a strong start with fiery 3rd round KO over James Wynn in his pro debut. Jones fired off some hard body punches followed by soem right hooks to the head. After 2 rounds Wynn wanted out. By round 3 a left - right combo gave him that option as he hit the deck only to get up long after the 10 count was given.

Winner "Dangerous" Darrell Jones who improves to 1-0, 1ko

William Jeter...vs....Pete Guthy
New York.............

Two unknowns came to the Blue and put on a pretty good fight while it lasted. The highlight came in the 3rd where Guthy threw a right handed bomb with everything he had behind it and landed squarely on Jeter's chin. The problem was, Jeter didn;t budge, then returned the favor two folder with a right handed bomb of his own which did put Guthy down twice, the second of which he wouldn't beat the 10 count for.

Winner: William Jeter TKO 3 - 2:52

Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson interview

In early August, live on ESPN 2 Friday Night Fights, Philadelphia’s Anthony “The Messenger” Thompson out-everything’d Ishmail Arvin over 6 rounds of boxing in Arvin’s hometown of Washington D.C. While it was clearly obvious that Thompson was the better fighter, a clash of heads caused a serious cut over The Messenger’s left eye. The gash was bad enough for the ringside doctor to determine that the fight can no longer go on. By rule, when a fight is stopped by an accidental clash of heads, it goes to the judges to determine the winner. But in this instance, referee Malik Waleed mistakenly ruled that the cut was caused by a punch and awarded a TKO win to Arvin who at the time was down on all three scorecards. Video evidence was immediately made available showing the real cause of the cut but this was disregarded and the erroneous ruling stood to the disbelief of many at ringside and the millions watching at home. This situation hasn’t gone away quietly as some might have hoped as protests, petitions and more were filed to make this situation right. We recently caught up with The Messenger and his brother Ty to talk in depth about the matter and were where things stand and how Team Thompson plans to move forward.

Philly Keith: As most people know, you were on the wrong end of what many are calling one of the worst boxing stoppages in recent memory. Clearly ahead in the fight, you were cut by a head but which was mistakenly ruled a punch. The fight was stopped and you were stuck with the loss. What’s the latest with this situation?

Team Thompson: As of right now the sanctioning body is on my side and stripped Arvin of the USBO belt that was on the line that night. A lot of people are upset over this, to see me lose like that. If I was awarded a win that way, I would have hung my head in shame if I took a butt whoopin’ like that! My people are on it and we are moving in a positive direction. Cameron Dunkin, who is one of the best managers in the business, is working on things.

PK: But the end result still hasn’t been over turned?

TT: The DC commission is on vacation but they will have to answer soon. I can’t lay the blame on Arvin, he is a fighter and came to win but I showed the world that I am a different level fighter. The world knows who won, I was in great shape, came in at 151 lbs. I fought through a big gash that burned like hell. I kept my poise and kept it clean.

PK: Going into the fight, what did you know of your opponent?

TT: We figured they were looking for a local guy in that area to build on for the future; Arvin had a good record but no real name before that fight. They thought if we can get a win over The Messenger, now we have something to sell tickets with and build off of. The fight was in D.C. but it was sold to TV as the return of Anthony Thompson because people know the name and what I bring to the ring.

PK: It was obvious that the fight was a very one sided your favor while it lasted. But the Maryland commission has been put on the spot in the past with some suspect decisions and such. What did you find out after the fight?

TT: It turned out that I was also fighting a politically connected commission. The referee Walid is from Arvin’s region and from the same gym. We hear from very reliable sources that Gary “Digital” Williams, a Maryland boxing writer who was ringside has stock invested in Arvin (A claim Williams vehemently denies). He was the only writer who gave Arvin much credit in the media. There was just a lot of grime involved.

This wasn’t your average fight. A title was on the line, sanctions were involved. It was a main event on ESPN. My career has always had some controversy around it, from the days with Top Rank to my last two losses which had very disputed endings, why would this be any different? The DC judge only had me up 2 rounds; referee Malik Walid missed a knockdown and calling it a slip. He missed the head butt, even Shannon Briggs called it in the 4th round and Joe Tessatore brought up the video. After seeing it on the TV the referee even admitted that it was a head butt and he missed the call originally!

PK: Do you want a rematch?

TT: Do you really want to see that again? In this case I don’t see any need for a rematch. The fight was not competitive. I knocked him down 3 times, was never in any trouble. He might have gotten one round, the 5th which I took off because he wasn’t doing anything. The people know who won that fight. I am disappointed because I was stripped of the opportunity to be the USBO champion and fight for the IBO title. I found out that I have a lot of supporters out there. I am a man who stands by his principals.

PK: Moving forward, you still do have that cut over your eye. How long do you expect it to take to fully heal before for can return to the ring?

TT: I think I will be ready in about another month; late October might be a push but definitely by November. We are working on some things; HBO is interested in some Boxing After Dark dates. It’s funny I am getting more calls after this fight even with the supposed loss. The world knows who won. I am out to prove that I am the best in the world.

PK: Final question, what do you think of the Jr. Middleweight division as it stands right now?

TT: I think the Jr middleweight division is wide open. There are some talented guys but no one superstar talent you can put your finger on. But some of the fighters out there like Sergio Mora got the support and backing to become world champ. You have Verno Phillips who is an older veteran but in this game you can get old real soon. Training is the hardest part. Can he put out a hard 6 weeks of training anymore? Watch out for The Messenger!
PK: Thanks for your time Champ, best of luck in the future!

Thompson is also an active member in his community, working with VisionQuest, helping juveniles around the city lead better lives.

Mike Jones wins the NABA Title, Mundy upset by Cisneros @ The New Alhambra

photos by Larry Tornambe

Peltz Boxing Promotions kicked off Labor day weekend in Philly with a stiff 7 fight card at The New Alhambra which featured Mike Jones first crack at a championship belt and other fights intended to showcase quite a few local undefeated prospects. Not everything went according to plan in the ring as we saw two undefeateds suffer their first career loss while others found themselves in a good fight for the first time in their short careers. While some suffered setbacks, others showed they are ready to make the jump into the next phase of their career. The card has quite a few of the usual suspects from the Peltz Boxing stable such as Latif Mundy, Dennis Hasson & Anthony Flores and opportunities were given to Ray Serrano, Jesus Barbosa & a bounce back chance for Pedro Martinez. The action was steady and the fights were good, read below to find out how it all went down on the corner of Swanson & Ritner.

Welterweight Division

NABA Title Fight

Mike Jones....vs.....Juliano Ramos
Philadelphia.........Brazil
14-0, 12ko's.........15-1, 12ko's

It was the moment Mike Jones has waited for since turning pro and he took advantage of the opportunity by scoring a big 6th round KO over Juliano Ramos to win the vacant NABA Welterweight title which comes with a world ranking within the WBA. Before the fight, a fan submission contest was held to determine a new nickname for Jones who previously went by the gimmick "Machine Gun". After 300 or so submissions, he is now known as "The Messiah" and after this win, could actually be the chosen one who makes a run to the top of the boxing world from the Peltz Boxing stable.

This fight started off at a steady pace with Jones doing most of the work in the opening rounds. He would circle, jab, find some openings and slip in the occasional overhand right as Ramos stayed defensive. Ramos picked up in the rounds 3 & 4 getting more aggresive, working his way inside to rattle off a few body shots and overhand rights. Jones took these shots well and fired and hard punches back in return.

The 6th round opened up big for Jones as a right hand on the top of the head rattled Ramos. Jones, smelling blood went in for the kill and unloaded, beating Ramos aroudn the ring until a big left hook finished the job leaving Ramos on all fours and forcing referee Steve Smoger to stop the contest. The crowd burst into an eruption not heard on the corner of Swanson & Ritner since the days of Rob Van Dam.

Winner - Mike Jones - 6th round KO

Jr. Middleweight Division

Latif Mundy...vs....Rudy Cisneros
Philly..............Chicago
9-0, 3ko's..........11-2, 10ko's

The co-feature was an interesting fight as Philly's Latif Mundy, a 2004 & 2005 PA Golden Gloves champion, made his first significant step up in competition while Chicago's Cisneros, who was a 2004 Olympian and also a member of The Contender Season 2, looked to build on his momentum of 3 straight KO wins.

Cisneros seemed to be in control early as he would consistently land right hands as Mundy tried to work on the inside. Mundy picked it up in the middle rounds, at times using the ring and boxing Cisneros who at times looked to have no answers for Mundy's boxing skills. Staying on the outside also created some opportunities for Mundy to go into the kitchen to fire off 3 & 4 punch combos to the body.

It was a close fight coming down the stretch but in the last round Mundy was penalized 1 point for a low blow. After the deduction, Mundy fought with an never seen before fire, sensing he needed the knockout to win. He landed some good shots but the veteran Cisneros was able to make it to the final bell.

It went to the cards with all three judges scoring in favor of Rudy Cisneros by scores of 78-73, 77-74 & 76- 75.

Super Middleweight Divison

Dennis Hasson....vs.....Dave Cook
Philly..................Butler, PA
3-0, 1KO................3-1, 1KO

Dennis Hasson continues to rise and on this night was involved in an entertaining fight which was a two way rumble early but saw Hasson dominate down the stretch which lead to a 4th round KO win for the Kenzington native.

Hasson's decorated amateur background has been well documented so we all know he can fight. On this night he also showed he has a pretty good chin as he shook off quite a few good left hands from Cook in the early going.

The two stayed on the inside for most of the night and by the 3rd, Cook appeared to be bleeding badly from the nose & mouth. He kept on coming but that was a bad move as a big flurry of Hasson punches sealed the deal late in the round.

Winner - Dennis "The Assassin" Hasson by 4th round KO

Cruiserweight Division

Pedro Martinez.....vs.....ReShawn Scott
Philly....................Philly
1-1, 1ko..................1-0

Early in the night the fans were treated to a very good two way cruiser weight slugfest between two new comers with the fight ending in 2nd round KO for Pedro Martinez.

The opening round was very good as both men stood threw heavy handed rights and lefts, connecting at a good rate. Scott got the better in the beginning though Martinez stormed back late in the round.

Early in the second, there were more exchanged but a Martinez right suddenly closed the show for the knockout win. It was a very good fight while it lasted

Winner - Pedro Martinez by 2nd round KO

Lightweight Division

Anthony Flores....vs....Jose Mandujaro
Philly..................Michigan
3-0, 1ko................2-1, 1ko

"Flawless" Anthony Flores turned in his best outing as a pro with an impressive 4th round KO over Michigan's Jose Mandujaro in yet another good two way fight at The New Alhambra.

Early in the fight, both men stayed in the trenches trading shots at close range. As the fight went on, Flores made adjustments, used his boxing skills and kept Madujaro turning which allowed him to pick his shots and eventually knock the man out at :22 mark of the 4th round. It looks like Flores is ready for the 6 rounders now.

Winner - "Flawless" Anthony Flores by 4th round KO

Welterweight Division

Raymond Serrano.....vs....Jimmy LeBlanc
Philly....................Boston
6-0, 4ko's................11-13, 3ko's

Former amateur standout Ray Serrano returned to Philly and had his way with a well past his prime Jimmy LeBlanc, scoring 3 knockdowns en route to a 1st round KO win. Serrano jumped on his opponent from the start and by the 2:32 mark, referee Shawn Clark was waving it off. Look for Serrano to jump up the competition soon.

Winner - Ray Serrano by 1st round KO

Lightweight Division

Jesus Barbosa...vs...Fransisco Palacios
Philly...............Connecticut
4-0, 3ko's...........3-5, 1ko

In a shocker, Connecticut's Fransisco Palacios pounded out a one sided 6 round unanimous decision win over the previously undefeated Jesus Barbosa. While the scorecards were all towards one corner, it was a very entertaining toe to toe battle though Palacios seemed to get the better in each frame, even scoring a 3rd round knockdown with an overhand right. Near the end, Barbosa was bleeding from the eye but kept on coming, it was just not to be his night as the final bell sounded and all three judges scored it in favor of the upset minded Palacios.

Winner - Fransisco Palacios by unanimous decision.
