Hank Lundy KO's Cintron in 5, Rosado wins by split decision over Ouma in Newark!

Talk about it on the forum http://phillykeith.com/fightforum/index.php?topic=735.0

South Philly's "Hammerin'" Hank Lundy talks a big game and early reports from Newark as saying he backed his words up in a big way with a one sided 5 round knockout win over the previously undefeated Jason Cintron of Reading, PA. More details to come soon but it has to be recognized that Lundy once again fearless goes into unknown territory against an undefeated opponent and leave with his 0 still in tact. It won't be long before Hammer Time returns to TV soon taking on the name fighters in the 135 - 140 lb division.

In the co-feature North Philly's "King" Gabriel Rosado is back on the map by winning a split decision over former Jr. Middleweight champion Kassim Ouma in their 10 rounder. Word out of Newark is that the early going was closely contested but Rosado was clearly in control in the final rounds in an action match up that went the 10 round distance. The first scorecard read 96-94 Ouma but were over ridden by scores of 96 - 94 & 97 - 93 in favor of Rosado who once again grabs the bull by the horns and reestablishes himself as a threat in the 154 lb division. Expect to see Rosado receive another opportunity to fight under the big lights of a major network soon.

Mtagwa vs. Medina @ The Blue Horizon May 1, 2009!

Peltz Boxing returns to the Legendary Blue Horizon on May 1, 2009 for what is looking to be an 8 fight card highlighted by the return of world rated featherweight Rogers "The Tiger" Mtagwa (25-12-2, 18ko's) in the main event. His assignment is 10 rounds of action against the mahogany headed Mexican Ricardo Medina. Mtagwa is fresh off a 2008 national fight of the year candidate when he rose from the grave to knock-out the IBF's #6 contender Tomas Villa in a stone cold thriller, adding another chapter in a career of peaks and valleys. Medina (31-33-5, 17ko's) is a well travelled journeyman who has pulled two upsets in this town in the past, though to competition well below the level of Mtagwa. His most recent outing as a decision loss to the 13 win prospect John Jackson in Florida. Many consider this a "safe" fight for the Tanzanian contender, but then again when has Rogers Mtagwa ever made his ring life easy? Stylistically both match up for a crowd pleaser as Mtagwa throws lots of punches and Medina only knows one direction, forward.

The under card will see Philly's Kassem Wilson take on Louis Leija of San Antonio in an 8 rounder. Philly Middleweight Jamaal Davis has a tough assignment in Jerome Ellis of Paterson, NJ. Also scheduled for action are Anthony Flores, Victor Vasquez, Tony Ferrante & Ardrick Butler all in separate bouts.

More info to come soon, get your tickets by calling 215-765-0922

R.I.P. Harry Kalas

Here is a tribute to one of the all time Philly greats, Harry Kalas who sadly passed away at 1:20 this afternoon. As a lifelong die hard baseball fan, I listened to this guy since I was a little kid. You will be missed my friend, say hello to Whitey for me!

Derek Ennis loses belt at the scales, Kamarah Pasley wins by KO in Atlantic City

The proposed USBA regional Jr. Middleweight title fight between Derek Ennis and Ishmael Arvin was canceled when Ennis came in 4 lbs overweight.

By Rick Scharmberg at ringside

Kamarah Pasley and Chuck Berry stepped up to create an all-Philadelphia Cruiserweight main event after the original main event fell through last night at the Boardwalk Hall’s Adrian Phillips Ballroom last night in Atlantic City, NJ. Pasley rose to the occasion by winning his fourth straight fight, stopping Berry with a vicious left uppercut at 1:38 of the sixth and final round. The seven bout card produced a full night of boxing that featured some crowd-pleasing knockouts, and showcased the talent of two outstanding young Atlantic City prospects.

No one complained when promoter Diane Fischer, of Dee Lee Promotions, announced to the crowd - which included former world champions, Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas, Virgil Hill, and Bruce Seldon - that the main event between Derek Ennis and Ishmail Arvin collapsed, after Ennis could not come close to making weight for their scheduled 154-pound USBA junior middleweight title bout. The show must go on, and in the end, it was matchmaker Sonny Mistretta’s savvy that saved the show, because the card was solid enough to stand on its own.

Kamarah Pasley (4-3, 2 KOs) was once an overly cautious southpaw who used his well conditioned legs to move a bit too much, and didn’t fire his potent straight left hand nearly enough. As a result, Pasley dropped his first three pro fights. Then he made some changes. Pasley still has movement, but now it is aggressive, and he still has that potent left, but now he uses an active right jab to set it up. The result was his fourth straight win.

The first round was a feeling-out round, with Berry (4-10, 2 KOs) looking to land his clubbing right, and Pasley probing to find an opening for his left. The second round was close, as well. Berry landed some right hands that were partially blocked, while Pasley jabbed and tested his straight left to the body. Kamarah countered a Berry right with a nice left to the head at the bell.

In round three, two solid lefts from Pasley ripped open a gash over Berry’s left eye. The blood was noticeable on Pasley’s white trunks, as it ran down Berry’s face and onto his chest. Berry came out desperate in the fourth, and landed several overhand rights to the head. Pasley calmly worked around the bombs, and found the solution: his left uppercut. The doctor inspected Berry’s cut as Chuck pleaded for “one more round”. Classy cut man Joey Eye was able to patch things up between rounds.

Berry came out in round five with his main weapon, the overhand right, and Pasley promptly countered with a straight left to Berry’s left eye. Pasley punctuated the round with another big left uppercut. Midway through round six, Pasley unloaded another huge left uppercut that staggered Berry, and a follow-up straight left brought referee Lindsey Paige in to close the show at the 1:38 mark.

Soto blanks Richardson

Former amateur star Eugene Soto took a four round unanimous decision over Vernon Richardson in a four round middleweight bout in which both fighters made their pro debuts. Soto is a local product, and entered the ring to huge applause.

Soto’s fistic background was evident immediately, as he allowed Richardson to come forward, while peppering him with an assortment of combinations. Soto decided to practice defense in round two, and deftly slipped everything that came his way, even with his back to the ropes.

Soto (1-0) began loading up in round three, and tried to take Richardson out. Richardson (0-1) is a tough customer, and withstood the hard left hooks and right from Soto. Richardson clipped Soto on the chin with a nice left hook in the opening sequence of round four. Soto was momentarily stunned, but either Richardson didn’t notice it, or didn’t have anything left t follow up with. The moment passed, and Soto was soon on the attack again until the final bell.

The scores were all 40-36 in favor of Eugene Soto.

Harvell decisions Todd

Lavarn Harvell (3-0) is another local prospect with promise. He showed maturity beyond his record in taking a four round unanimous decision over a very tough Michael Todd (0-1) in a four round light heavyweight bout.

What impressed most about Harvell was his dedication to hammering the body, and the fluidity with which he moves his hands. He worked both hands to Todd’s body in every round. By all rights, Todd should have been out of there, but he never stopped trying. Todd landed some decent punches in every round, and might be a good prospect in his own right if he is moved properly.

The scores were all 40-36 in favor of Lavarn Harvell.

Torres defeats Blocker

Eliud Torres won a technical decision over the debuting Siddel Blocker in a four round lightweight bout, after a clash of heads early in the fourth round cut both men. Torres was cut on his forehead, and when the bleeding could not be stopped, the bout was halted 36-seconds into the final round. Under New Jersey boxing commission rules, if more than half the scheduled rounds were completed, the bout goes to the scorecards.

In this case, the first three rounds were scored, and Torres clearly won every round. All three judges ruled 30-27 in his favor.

Torres improves to 2-0-1, while Blocker starts out 0-1.

Hall KOs Porter

Marcus “The Beast” Hall scored a brutal one-punch knockout over debuting William Porter at 2:46 of the second round of a four round welterweight bout.

Hall (2-0, 1 KO), a southpaw, delivered a straight left hand to a retreating Porter, dropping him near his own corner for referee Lindsey Paige’s full count. As a precaution, Williams was removed from the ring stabilized and on a stretcher.

Word came back later that Porter was OK.

Green stops Valdez

Bryne Green scored an impressive first round stoppage over Edward Valdez in a four round junior lightweight bout.

Green (5-1, 3 KOs) countered the wild opening rushes of Valdez (3-7, 2 KOs) with two pinpoint right hands, followed by a left hook that dropped Valdez in his tracks. He was up unsteadily at referee Alan Huggen’s count of “nine”, but a hard right hand follow-up from Green prompted Huggens to make a timely stoppage at 1:39 of the opening round.

Resnick outworks Lewis

In the opening bout of the night, Jayme Resnick took a majority decision over Luquan Lewis in a four round lightweight bout.

The opening round seemed to be the swing round, with Lewis winning the early part, and Resnick the latter. Resnick took the next two rounds with some nice right hands and a bit more activity, while Lewis clearly won the fourth round.

The final scores were 39-37 (twice) for Resnick, and even at 38-38.

Resnick improves to 1-1, while Lewis slips to 0-1, with 1 no contest.

_______________________________________________________________________

Dee Lee’s next promotion will come on May 9 at the Trump Taj Mahal, and will feature an interesting bout between Hector “Macho” Camacho Sr. and Luis Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas! More information on this show will be available soon.

Gabriel Rosado steps in to fight Kassim Ouma in Newark April 24th!

"King" Gabriel Rosado once again steps up to the plate for another big fight, this time signing on to battle former Jr. Middleweight champion Kassim Ouma in a 10 round co-feature in Newark NJ April 24th. If there is ever a such thing as a cross roads fight for a 22 year old, this is it. Rosado has spent the last year traveling the East Coast taking on some of the best in the business. He recently won a tune up by knockout and now will put himself right back into the thick of the 154 lb division.

Ouma, whose documentary Kassim the Dream is gaining rave reviews at film fests across the country as it details his life from a child solider in Uganda to boxing champion in the USA, also finds himself in a must win situation. A one time shining star of the business now finds himself on the outside looking in as younger, hungrier fights have moved ahead. Recent losses on the big stage have bumped his value back a bit but he is climbing the ladder again, most recently with a knockout win over Martinus Clay in Philly. The winner should receive another opportunity to fight under the big lights of a major network.

The card is highlighted by Ireland's John Duddy who will take on Billy Lyell in a 10 round Jr. Middleweight bout. For those who haven't been to Newark for a fight card, let me tell you this, they produce a rockin' fight crowd! If you are feeling up for a road trip this could be one to check out. for tickets call 937-200-7050 (Main Events)

Derek Ennis to defend USBA regional title against Ishmael Arvin in Atlantic city on April 11!

Photo by Anthony Gargano / www.pixgargano.com

Philly Jr. Middleweight Derek Ennis returns to the ring to defend his regional USBA title on April 11th at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City against Maryland's Ishmael Arvin in the 10 round Dee Lee Promotions main event. Ennis, currently ranked #13 by the USBA, has won 5 in a row and has a chance to make a major jump in the rankings with a win. His opponent Arvin may sound familiar to many as he is the fighter who holds a controversial win over Anthony Thompson who happens to be Ennis stable mate at the Muhammad Ali Gym in Germantown. It is a good piece of matchmaking by fight game veteran Sonny Mistretta who pits two of the division young and hungry against one another. Rest assured both will come in looking to make a statement as the winner will be in the mix for an even bigger fight in the near future against good competition in a deep but unsettled Junior Middleweight division.

The Ennis camp likes their chances in this match as manager Moz Gonzales recently told us "this is going to be a good fight. It is a chance for Derek to jump up in the rankings so we are feeling strong and are ready" He also added "Harry Yorgey and Eddie Chambers did their thing last week, now it is our turn and we are going to put on a show and bring a big win back home to Philly!"

For those who haven't seen Ennis live, many feel he is one of the most polished boxers residing in this area. After suffering two surprising early career losses, he has made adjustments to his game without losing his flair to get into a good fight. If he is successful on this night, it won't be long before you see Ennis show up on a TV near you soon.

Nakash stops Brunelli in 7, Edmunds is Marvel-ous against Tyric Robinson @ The Blue!

photo by Anthony Gargano / www.pixgargano.com

I have to tip my cap to "The Don" Don Elbaum. It seems like every time there is a fight under his watch at Mother's house, I am always complaining that he never has the card finalized more than 2 days before bell time or that he is always throwing some cheese ball gimmick out in the main event and giving it the hard sell. It was the same ol' story this time around with "the Italian - Jewish Philadelphia" title on the line in the main event, with the state #1 contender in the Super Middleweight division Gee Culmer not offered an opponent that would get Greg Sirb's stamp of approval, with other fights being patch worked with last second fill ins. With all of that in the air on April 3rd, The Don patchwork produced one entertaining card this Friday in front of a jam packed audience who came from all walks of life.

The main event more than lived up to expectations as Israel's Ran Nakash (17 - 0, 13ko's) got the fight of his life from Mayfair's Dave Brunelli (8-5, 3ko's) and still pulled out the victory in a match that ended early in the 7th due to the doctors orders because of Brunelli's apparently cut eyelid. The fight started with more hoop la than a Super Bowl half time show. Italian announcer, Jewish announcer, Italian anthem singer, Jewish anthem singer, USA anthem singer, Italian ring girl... you catch my drift.

After the ring cleared and the men got down to business, we were treated to a damn good Philly style main event. After 2 rounds it looked like Nakash was going to send the Brunelli and his big crowd home disappointed early. By round 4 Brunelli was showing balls the size of grapefruits as he took a lot of Nakash's best power shots and encouraged him to keep on coming, standing an exchanging at short range. Midway through round 6, the possibility of Brunelli snatching the fight with a late KO wasn't out of the question as he backed Nakash up with a few good shots of his own and kept fighting strong. It wasn't to be, as referee Gary Rosado ordered Brunelli to see the doctor at the start of round 7 to check on a swollen eye and bloody nose, wounds the doctor deemed too serious to continue. It was an unfortunate ending to a fight that allowed both fighters to show their wares. Nakash again showed he is a non stop buzzsaw and is not just some built up boxer, Brunelli showed up in the best shape of his life and displayed a toughness that even his biggest detractors have to appreciate. After the fight Nakash said "I was really surprised he was able to take those shots. he is a really tough fighter". Here's to both men for putting on a fight that lived up to the hype.

In the co-feature, Frankford's Julius Edmonds bullied his way to a 6 round unanimous decision win over Philly's Tyric Robinson in their highly anticipated Jr. Welterweight contest. From start to finish, Edmunds fought like he wanted to make a statement and his mission was to stay in Robinson's chest and for every second of every round. He exerted all of his energy to push forward and punch hard throwing a variety of combinations to the head and body while smothering anything his opponent could fire back in return. Robinson did not back down and punched back every step of the way but it was Edmunds who was clearly in control the entire time. The fight went to the score cards which read 60 - 54 x 2 & 58 - 56 for Edmunds. It is another strong showing for Edmunds who many feel can match up with any 140 lb fighter competing in this area. When asked about this fight he said "this was a very good win for me, Tyric Robinson is a known fighter in this area." When asked about who he wanted next he replied "I'm not sure but I'm thinking maybe a fight with Victor Vasquez." Now THAT would be one hell of a fight....

On the undercard...

Reading's Julio Caesar Matthew's won a hard fought unanimous decision over NJ's William Gill. It was a steady pace through most of the fight where each men landed some good, single shots. Matthews did some good work in rounds 4 and 5 as the south paw was able to land clean left hands. Gill came on strong in the final minute, landing consecutive rights that quickly swelled up Matthews eye. It eventually went to the cards which read 60 - 54, 59 - 55 & 58 - 56 all for Matthews who improves to 7 - 0 with 5ko's.

Queens NY featherweight Joselito Callado out boxed and out rumbled a determined, yet limited Jason Rorie of NC over 6 rounds. There were spots where Joselito would literally box circles around his opponent, but to the delight of the fans he opted to make a toe to toe fight of it for half of the fight and got the better in the two way exchanges. The only thing Callado lacks is pop but aside from that you can tell he is a very good, well rounded fighter. The cards read 59 - 55 x 3 for the Queens native. Before the fight, special guest ring announcer Mike Missinelli was booed mercilessly but when it was over the fans gave both fighters a standing ovation.

Jr. Lightweight Paul Fernandez got back on the winning track with a 4th round KO over TN's Joseph Francisco, a fighter who all but gave up after an impressive 1st round. In the beginning Fernandez slowly moved forward, stalking in a Jason Vorhees manner and Francisco took full advantage using the ring, landing a few shots and getting out of there. As the fight wore on Francisco kept showboating but stopped throwing where as Fernandez began to land good combinations upstairs. Down the stretch, Fernandez dropped his opponent twice and it got to the point where referee Gary Rosato stopped it at 2:57 of the final round.

Welterweight Ronald Cruz stayed undefeated in a decent showing against a very in shape Shannon Hill of Cincinatti. Cruz loaded up a lot and did connect with some heavy bombs as Hill tried to circle and box for most of the fight. Cruz was most effective on the rare times he went to the body, something he should keep in his arsenal for the future. If he slipped in a few jabs, we could have a threat on our hands.... Take nothing away from Hill who did come to fight but in the end all the judges were in agreement that Cruz was the winner by scores of 40 - 36 x2 and 39 - 37.

In the opener, Taneal Goyco and Davit Davitashivili put on a wild, somewhat sloppy slugfest much to the delight of the crowd. Goyco landed some bombs early but Davit fought back hard in the middle. Davits face looked like an old piece of roast beef near the end with cuts and swelling on both eyes but he gave it all he had. Goyco did his thing as well and did more down the stretch to secure a unanimous decision win by scores of 39 - 36 x 3 as Davit was deducted a point for head butting in the 3rd.

Hank Lundy to fight Jason Cintron in Newark April 24th!

You have to tip your hat to South Philly's "Hammerin" Hank Lundy (12-0-1, 6ko's). Once again he puts his undefeated record on the line against another undefeated fighter in a venue that isn't his home. On this occasion, Hammer Time comes to Newark, New Jersey on April 24th for a potential show stealer against Reading PA's Jason Cintron (10-0, 3ko's) for 8 rounds of battle between two of Pennsylvania's finest 140 lb fighters. Lundy has been a familiar name in Philly for some time now as he was a well regarded amateur and also fought quite a bit in the area as a young pro. Most recently he has spent time taking on the up and comers of his division on ESPN.

Cintron on the other hand burst on the scene last fall when he stepped in to fight Tyric Robinson at The Blue Horizon on less than a week notice and pulled off a one sided decision win. Cintron followed by in December with a vicious knockout win in his hometown of Reading, PA. Some say he has real skill, others think he only has a name becuase of his brother Kermit who is a former Welterweight champion.

In a release sent through Lundy's promoter Jimmy Burchfield, the hardly humble Lundy has already landed the first punch by stating "He never fought nobody," Lundy said. "This is the thing I'm saying -- you've got to crawl before you can walk and I think they made a big mistake by choosing to take this fight." "This is my statement to [Cintron]: After this fight, he'll never be the same." Attempts to set up a pre fight video with Lundy are under way.

Listen to the entire interview here

If you are one to make a road trip, this could be the card for you as Lundy is never in a bad fight. Crowds in Newark are pretty lively and this should be no different as the card is headlined by Ireland's John Duddy in a warm up bot. It will be preceded by Kassim Ouma taking on Troy Browning in a 10 round Jr. Middleweight co feature. For tickets call 937-200-7050 (Main Events)

Team Brunelli Promises Upset @ The Blue Horizon on April 3rd!

On April 3rd at the Legendary Blue Horizon, Israel's Ran Nakash (17-0, 12ko's) once again headlines, and once against people are saying he is being put in soft. Then again, there are others who say he is going to get his ass kicked for the first time in his life. The assignment is Dave Brunelli (8-4, 3ko's), the big ticket from Northeast Philly who hasn't been in the ring for almost a year. All of the insiders dub Brunelli as a big underdog. The circumstances were the same last time Brunelli fought at the Blue A match where Dave Brunelli whooped on Aaron Lyons, the only man in this town to beat Joey Abell.

Yes, the same Joey Abell who every Philly promoter, manager, street agent and advisor either avoided or got fired over during over his time in Philly. The same fighter who never had a shot at John Poore, Chazz Witherspoon, Eddie Chambers etc etc to prove he was the best heavyweight around.... In hindsight Lyons didn't turn out to be much so give Brunelli's team a credit for exposing a fighter everyone feared. Nakash main weapon is knockout power. He has scored some very good knockouts in his last couple of fights though the competition wasn't very strong (not counting Larry Robinson). Strong ticket sales have led to his rise as a main eventer at the Blue Horizon. The real question is "is Nakash a Cruiserweight or a Heavyweight?" Nakash hasn't made the "true" 200 lb weight limit in over 4 fights. Regardless of weight of circumstance, this fight is going down. if you are interested, go to The Blue April 3rd!

In the co-feature, check out Frankford's Julias Edmunds (4-3) vs. Tyric Robinson (9-3-1, 3ko's) in what should be a very competitive fight. This one could be good but all depends on which Robinson shows up. Edmunds stock has been rising after consecutive strong outings. This fight will tell it all on who are some of the best local 140 lber's.... The winner would make a good match against Ryan Belasco.

The undercard is STILL being worked out with less than 48 hours to go until bell time. This card can be anywhere from 6 to 9 fights, not sure what Don Elbaum has up his sleeve but I will find out tomorrow.

Gee Cullmer (15-1, 3ko's), the #1 contender to the PA Super Middleweight title is is said to be scheduled for action. Rumors of a rematch against John "The Baptist" Terry are floating around at the moment.... Management needs to do better for their fighter and not always have him wait around until the last minute to know the assignment.

Ronald Cruz, the undefeated Welterweight from Bethlehem is also a possibility for action.

More fights to be announced soon as they are made official.....

Tyrell Biggs story

Cus D’Amato once told me “if I had to take an athlete from another sport and teach him how to box it would be a basketball player.” So when Tyrell Biggs played for West Philly H.S. “Speedboys” who were the city basketball champs it was an easy transition when at 18 he walked into Joe Frazier’s gym in 1978. At 6:05 he certainly had the right height and slender build as Mr. Hayes started him and was eventually turned over to famed trainer George Benton. Harry Yorgey KO's Hearns in the 9th on ShoBox

Harry Joe Yorgey stock is at an all time high right now after he dealt Detroit's Ronald Hearns his first career loss (21-1, 17ko's) in front of a live national audience this weekend on Shobox: The Next Generation. Yorgey, another former #1 on the Philly Keith local top 10 pound for pound list, is now firmly planted on the national map after he thoroughly outclassed the undefeated son of an all time legend. Yorgey scored three total knockdowns and hit canvas once before finishing the fight off in round 9 which left Hearns out for the full count. A very good showing for the pride of Bridgeport, PA who stays undefeated with a record of 22-0-1.. More info to come soon.
